Do you want to improve your public speaking ability?
** Top 5 Bestseller in Public Speaking, Business Life and Business Communications categories **
As creatives in a crowded world, we can no longer sit in our rooms, creating alone, if we want a viable income. Increasingly, we have to be out there in the world, sharing our knowledge and being visible in order to have a successful career.
Public speaking can be an extra income stream, or can form an integral part of your marketing. It's also a good idea to plan for success and authors/creatives often have to speak when they become well-known, so it's best to start practicing earlier.
This book is a starter pack and an easy reference guide with the information that you need the most to speak confidently and professionally in public. And, although some chapters have specific tips for introverts, much of this information will be useful for anyone who is interested in public speaking, regardless of their personality type.
In this book, I'll share everything that I know as a professional speaker and introverted author-entrepreneur.
The book contains lots of tips about public speaking in general, based on my own experience over the last five years. In addition, I cover some specific points that creative introverts need to consider as speakers.
You can read this book from start to finish, but you can also dip in and out, as each chapter contains succinct tips that you'll need at different times on your journey.
In this book, you will find
- Part 1 goes into the practicalities of speaking types of speaking, preparation, your actual talk, and what happens afterwards.
- Part 2 is about some of the psychological aspects of speaking your mindset, authenticity, confidence, and tackling the inevitable anxiety, which we all feel.
- Part 3 discusses the business side of speaking financials, marketing, and how to create multiple streams of income.
- Part 4 contains interviews with three fantastic professional speakers, each from a different market, to give you a variation in perspective. Mark McGuinness is an introvert, Clare Edwards is an extrovert and Alastair Humphreys sits somewhere in the middle. There are also videos, audio and extra image-formatted transcripts, so you can experience this information in other modes if you prefer.
- The Appendices contain resources that may be useful in your speaking journey, including my own speaking checklist and booking form, example sales page and a series of questions for you to answer that will kickstart your public speaking.
˃˃˃ I’m an author and professional speaker, and I’m also an introvert.
I often get asked how I do what I do, when our natural tendency is to relish being alone and creative, not standing in front of a crowd.
In this book, I share everything I’ve learned about being a speaker and creative over the last 5 years of speaking internationally, in front of large and small audiences.
I also dispel some of the myths around being a speaker. You don’t have to be Tony Robbins, bouncing around on stage with a booming voice and larger than life persona.
You just have to be you, and tell your stories.
˃˃˃ Praise for 'Public Speaking'
“I bought your new book on public speaking today, and does it ever speak to me! Your description of yourself as an introvert describes me perfectly, and the best part is it makes me feel that finally it’s okay to be an introvert, and I don’t need to apologize for leaving events early or slipping away from a writers’ conference for an hour or two to grab a nap! What a wonderful feeling of self-affirmation!”

This is a great book to help you get ready for public speaking and does not exclusively have to be read by authors, creatives or introverts - it is useful for anyone about to do some public speaking. I found all the before, during and after tips very handy. There were quite a few things I hadn't considered such as what to do if there were tech difficulties or hecklers. It was also a relief to know that feeling nervous and getting butterflies was a normal and common response. I now feel ready to dip my toe into the world of public speaking. Highly recommended.Product details

Public Speaking for Authors Creatives and other Introverts Books for Writers Book 6 eBook Joanna Penn Reviews
Very practical in technical, business, and many other ways. I anticipate rereading with a highlighter.
Joanna Penn does it again. Very helpful book. My only complaint is I felt it was a bit short and to the point. I wish the book had been longer with more detailed explanations.
Anything Joanna writes is brilliant and all of this information has been tested out. I can highly recommend this book.
I hoped I would be more inspired by it. All the helpful stuff in the appendices are hard to get through on an old kindle. I did pick up the author's enthusiasm and sense of change and that was great. It was okay but nothing I hadn't read before really. 4 stars because it was really well intentioned and meant to help.
It's not at all uncommon for authors to do some speaking in addition to their writing. For many authors or other creative professionals, public speaking can be very daunting. Based on her experiences as a speaker and on discussions with other professional speaker's, Joanna demystifies public speaking. She gives authors comprehensive info on why they should speak and how to go about constructing various presentations for different types of events/audiences. She also handles practicalities such as what to pack, how to find speaking opportunities, and how to figure out what to charge.
Any author or creative professional looking to expand their services and revenue will find this book useful.
This is the most comprehensive book I've read on public speaking. It not only covers the preparation process and mechanics of the act of public speaking but also how to promote yourself and grow your business as a speaker. Joanna makes the important point that you can still have a career as a public speaker without being an extrovert. She gives a disarming and frank account of how she has increased her own skills and confidence as a speaker and how she copes with her nerves. This book will appeal to people of all levels of experience - whether you're about to give your first author talk or want to make a career of public speaking.
Joanna Penn/J.F.Penn is a wealth of information and support for new authors. As a new writer, I was so focused on writing, I never thought about speaking . A month ago, I was invited to present at a conference. Though I have spoken before, I wanted to do it better. Speaking opportunities are marketing opportunities and as an Indie author, i needed to maximize the potential to sell my book. Joanna Penn has written a brilliant book that will make my speaking engagements that much richer. I have read all of her books including her fiction, and find everything she writes to be worth the purchase price and then some. She delivers a solid resource at an affordable price.
This is a great book to help you get ready for public speaking and does not exclusively have to be read by authors, creatives or introverts - it is useful for anyone about to do some public speaking.
