It was a forgotten place. A place with a dark history. Thousands of men had passed through its doors during the first three quarters of the twentieth century. Most had served their time and moved on. But not all had been so fortunate. As the years ticked by and the seasons changed, the old prison moldered away, but one thing stayed constant. In the deepest part of the night, on the darkest nights of the year—particularly in spring, if you were sensitive enough to hear them—sounds could be heard coming from the deepest bowels of the lowest level basement. All was not right. Something was waiting, alone in the darkness. Waiting for someone to finally hear its sorrow. When Petty Officer Ben Pierce decided to explore the long abandoned Naval Prison next to his decrepit barracks, the last thing he expected to find was a mystery. Something is in the Prison. Or is it some one? Where is the weeping coming from? When Ben follows the sounds to an ice cold, but empty, cell, he isn’t sticking around to find out any more details. But now he can’t get it out of his mind.

This story is told in third person, initially from Karl’s point-of-view, bless him, then Ben’s.As a reader unfamiliar with the history behind this story, I found myself equally fascinated and aghast. My heart broke for Karl, I wanted to be able to reach into my kindle and wrap him in my arms, both his human form and spiritual being.
Ben is an equally engaging character. The interaction between himself and ET2 Erik Johannsen stayed with me for a long time, not only what occurred but also how Ben secretly felt about ‘it’. I can’t say more without spoilers, but I’d love to know how much these kinds of things go on in real life.
Ben’s friends, Jen and Ed, were delightful supporting characters. Hell, all four main characters took up residence in my heart. I guess you could say the characters are what held me captive throughout this story.
There is some adult content and I will say a few of those parts pushed my limits of suspension of belief, but for the sake of the authors creative licence I went with it.
For most of the story, in the back of my mind I couldn’t help but wonder how these two men could possibly hope to have a happy ever after, and I have no intention of giving away the ending either. Grab a copy for yourself, I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

It was great when is the next one
I'm not a big fan of ghost romance stories, but I am really glad I gave this one a shot. I enjoyed the twist that gave them their HEA and the amount of history was just right, too!
I had tears in my eyes when reading about Karl but this was a sad bitter sweet ending.
You never know where you'll find love, and Karl and Ed prove that. I really enjoyed Daniels first story and can't wait to see what else comes from him.
Mitton is a gifted story teller. His characters are vivid and he delivers his narrative in a style polished and easy to read. Only good writers can make a reader care, and Mitton made me care. I'll always remember Karl, the beautiful ghost.
Really enjoyed this ghost story!
I felt so sad for poor Karl and what he went through, the historical aspect making for a rich, heartbreaking tale. When we meet Ben a number of years later, he can't quite believe what he's experienced when exploring the old prison located near his barracks.
Emotional read.
Never thought I’d put ”super sweet” and ”ghost story” in the same sentence, but those are the words I’d immediately pin on this story.
It starts out dark, and I had somehow figured that to be the baseline. Nope. As things evolve and we move out of historic times and into the now, it takes a drastic turn for the not so disheartening aftermath of WW2.
Karl was a WW2 German prisoner in a time where being German or gay sucked. Ben is a navy guy in present time, and although being gay in a uniform still causes problems in real life (as opposed to the official guidelines saying no one can be discriminated against), Ben knows certain freedoms to his sexuality—enough to be able to come out to his coworker Ed and his wife Jen.
Another thing Ben has against him is his place of residence. He lives on base, and it’s boring! Boring enough for the young man to go explore the historical buildings. And here, he meets Karl.
This is a book for readers who can handle the dark but loves the fluffy sweet romance. It’s for the reader who wants to be all over the spectrum emotionally, and the ones who have no problem setting aside the conventional “knowledge” of how ghosts and ghost stories are supposed to be.
Daniel Mitton manages to paint scenes clear enough for me to see even though I’ve never been there. I had no problems feeling like I stood in a place with lots of history or moved in an area that had seen new areas added to the old.
My biggest *hrmph* is that the story could easily have been longer! Easily! There was enough material for it because the plot and characters are there to be fleshed out (not an intended ghost pun on the incorporeal). Sometimes, it felt like Daniel Mitton was in a hurry to get through it and done. This being a debut novel, it’s something I’ve noticed to be a general feel when reading those.
But I liked the way he built it and how he played with fate and ghostly matter questions. I’m keeping an eye on this author from now on. I have a feeling he’s going to bring the “all over the spectrum” plots to my TBR list.
